Nazare in a bucket

Tuesday 16 December 2014

When I worked at Atlantic College my service (as in CAS) was life guarding which meant I spent a lot of time surfing. Fjords aren't known for their waves so I don't get to surf so often but still like to watch other people doing it. Last week was a particularly good week for big wave surfing as a huge Atlantic storm pushed waves into the beaches of Europe. When this happens big wave surfers head for the seaside town of Nazare in Portugal, you can see why in the video below. Inspired by these waves, I thought I'd see if I could make a simulation. Algodoo has the option to liquefy objects so I thought I'd try making water waves in a container. My first attempts to make waves by shaking the container weren't too successful so I resorted to Google and found the RailRoadBuilder611. He used the attraction between a rotating sphere and the water to make the waves and it works a treat. I really like the way the waves curl over forming a barrel. Should be able to model the practical Waves in a bucket.

Great possibilities for investigations.

Just worked out an alternative with a pendulum.
