I am just beginning my teaching of IB. Please can you explain why the Maguire study cannot be used for brain Imaging please. Many thanks

Dear Sue - Maguire is find for brain imaging. I looked here and don't see anywhere that says that this is not a good study for that learning object. Did you see that somewhere else?

Thank you for replying. I can't remember where but yes I had seen it written that it should not be used for this. Could it also be used for localisation of function? Many thanks. Sorry for the delay in reply but I couldn't remember where I posted the q!

A bit of a tricky one with localization of function, unless the students write about the differences between the anterior and posterior hippocampus....

Hello John, This is my first year teaching IB Psych and many , many thanks for your notes and outlines- I use them extensively. I am a bit confused with the approach for - Discuss 2 effects of the environment on Physiology and Discuss one effect of interaction between cognition and physiology in terms of behaviour.
For the first one- I taught Neuroplasticity here, highlighted Maguire's study and that of Rosezweig, Bennet & Diamond. Can I teach them the effect of Stress ( Seyles's Model ) for the second effect?
What can I use as a study for the interaction between cognition and physiology?
If both these LOs can come as SAQs & ERQs, what would be the distinguishing features?

I would use the research on emotion for the latter outcome on the interaction between cognition and physiology.

As for the first one, yes, neuroplasticity and then stress are great. It is exactly what I also teach my own students.

Discuss ethical considerations in research into genetic influences of behaviour. (SAQ: Describe, analyse, explain; ERQ: examine)
What would be the distinguishing feature of the answer if it is an ERQ question?

If it is an ERQ question, then the students would have to discuss various ethical considerations and not just one.
