Body Scan

Not the airport security type!

I have not had to go through one of the body scan machines yet but the security for air traffic apparently outweighs the invasion of personal rights. But this is a different story.

Nearly two years ago I found the Google Body Browser and wrote a blog about it.I just went back to see how things have changed and discovered the Zygote Body has taken over.

There are a number of improvements including both male and female models.  The sliding bar still removes one layer of organs, exposing underlying others but now there are toggle bars the hide single layers while showing any others.

The body can be rotated and the zoom works very well.

Students can toggle away layers to reveal only the system they need to draw and label, such as the female reproductive system. This way the students can see how the organ system are positioned close to each other.  If students add labels to the image, this may help them to label their own drawings.

Not every system is revealed so cleanly.  The breathing system is more complicated with the ribs, muscles and lung details but by moving through the layers, students should make the connection to the intimacy the various organ systems.  The labels also do not sit where the structure is shown so students can connect with ruled lines.

I think this could be a very useful and fun way to introduce and develop the physiology units.
