New syllabus 2022

Notification - New syllabus 2022

Recently, a lot of teachers have been asking about the timing of the release of the new syllabus. Please note the following:

  • Final exams for the current/outgoing syllabus is November 2023.
  • First exams for the new syllabus is May 2024 (for candidates starting the DP in the 2022/23 academic year).
  • The new syllabus will not be available until Feb/March 2022 on My IB / the PRC.
  • Official IB Workshops (upskilling training) will also be available from Feb/March 2022. These are referred to as Category 3 Subject Specific Seminars (SSS).
  • InThinking Business Management will be involved in providing upskilling CPD for the new course too. Please scroll down to see the three training events that have been arranged by InThinking.
  • OUP, Hodder Education, and IBID Press will have textbooks available for the new course in time for the 2022/23 academic year.
  • I will also be adding content for the new syllabus from December 2021, with everything ready for first teaching from Aug/Sept 2022 on InThinking Business Management.

Please also keep an eye on this page (Resources for IB Business Management) which will be updated in due course for the new syllabus: https://www.thinkib.net/businessmanagement/page/21712/resources-for-ib-business-management

What we know is changing

Key concepts

There will be a revised conceptual framework - CUEGIS will no longer be part of our course after final exams in N23. Instead, the course will see four interdisciplinary concepts:

  • Creativity
  • Change*
  • Ethics*, and
  • Sustainability

* These are also currently part of the conceptual framework (CUEGIS).

As with CUEGIS, these four concepts will enable students to explore the content of the new syllabus from multiple lenses or perspectives. Each unit in the new course will begin with conceptual understandings statements that include the 4 key concepts and summarize important ideas and core processes that are central to the unit. Inquiry statements will also be included for each unit of the syllabus to support teachers and students.

The Business Management Toolkit (BMT)

The new Business Management Toolkit (BMT) is a set of tools and techniques that can be used by students in different disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts across the contents of the new syllabus, including assessments (such as the IA and the EE).

The BMT is part of the syllabus content but it is expected that teachers will integrate the toolkit throughout the teaching of the course.

The BMT provides a valuable set of tools or frameworks to analyse different topics and situations in the context of the Business Management course. The toolkit will include content in the current syllabus but also new materials too.

Business Management textbook, IBID Press, 5th edition

I will be writing the new edition of the textbook, following publication of the official syllabus. As Oxford University Press (OUP) has a partnership agreement with the IB (its publishing partner), the OUP text will be the first one available on the market. The planned publication date is March/April 2022. My publisher, IBID Press, does not have a partnership agreement with the IBO, so this will come a little later. As the saying goes, "The early bird catches the worm", but in the alternate TOK world, the early worm is the one that gets eaten alive!

For those interested in adopting the 5th edition as their main textbook, please contact my publisher direct for updates (including ISBN, pre-orders, and expected publication dates): jodie@ibid.com.au

InThinking Business Management (new syllabus 2022)

The huge benefit of a digital platform like InThinking is the ability to make live updates. Subscribers will have access to content for the entire syllabus for the new IB DP Business Management course in time for first teaching in 2022. This is called a first mover advantage (forget the early bird and the early worm!)

Please also see below for upskilling training events organized by InThinking for the new syllabus. Note that these are not the same as the Category 3 Subject Specific Seminars being arranged by the IB.

In any case, many thanks for your ongoing support.

I hope that adds some clarity for the time being.

Best wishes

Paul
