Arts and entertainment

One of the suggested topics for Part 2 of the Language A: Language and Literature guide is 'arts and entertainment'. As we explore how various media achieve different effects on different audiences, we cannot ignore the importance of entertainment. We will go beyond a simple definition of entertainment as the sole purpose of a text and ask: 'Whom does the text entertain?' 'How does the text entertain?' 'Can entertaining texts influence people's ideology?'

In these pages you will find lesson materials that answer these questions and more.

Guiding questions

  1. How is language used in various media to entertain?

  2. How do entertaining texts influence people's ideologies?

  3. How do the arts reflect cultural values?

My question pertains to the first guiding question under Arts and entertainment. By language, are we just talking about the spoken discourse or does it include images, colours, music also?

Hi Priya,

The question itself refers to just language or words. However, almost everything in our course includes images and the rest of it. These are just guiding questions created to help students to think about the topic under this part of the course. You can, of course, amend the guiding questions to include the list you wrote above to make it more inclusive.
