Many of the plays studied on the course defy simple categorization as either tragedy or comedy but it is important that students are aware of these genres as they represent both the origins and the two extremes of the theatrical experience. Furthermore, it is likely that the plays they study do contain elements of either or both of these polarities and so an awareness of them can help to illuminate what their playwrights...
