Poetry: reading aloud..?

It is a frequently uttered maxim that poetry should be "heard" or "read aloud". This is typically said in view of the way poetry in particular makes use of elements of sound and rhythm, which are not so easy to appreciate by just seeing or reading the poem on the page. Even in reference to the Paper 1 examination, where of course it would be impossible to say the poem out loud, we might advise our students to "hear"...
