The urban myth, or urban legend, is a good story told as truth, but which probably never happened. A standard identifying element is that it happened to "a friend of a friend" - in other words, it is claimed to be true because you could in theory go and ask the friend of the friend ... but who does ? Anyway, you can check out the basic explanation of the phenomenon in the Wikipedia page, and here are some good sources...
