Metaphors are useful because they communicate ideas in fresh and original ways. Indeed, new combinations of words naturally mean new combinations of ideas - if we"re surprised by the expression, we"re likely to be surprised by the idea.The problem is that the fresh, new metaphor rapidly becomes commonplace - almost inevitably, since if people find a metaphorical phrase useful they"re going to use it ... to death.
