IB English B: Exploring ideas

If we want students to "explore" an idea, we can start by simply saying "well, what do you think about...?" Fine, and with some classes this is the best way because they are already thinking actively about the topic. However, an open question like that may well end up with not very much exploration at all, but rather repetition of what they have always thought, superficially and without venturing outside their comfort...
