Language & culture

Most language teachers would accept, at least in theory, that it is valuable for students to understand something of the culture of the language that they are studying.But what does this really mean in practice? Will students really learn to handle the language better if they know about social traditions such as Thanksgiving in the US ... or about High Cultural monuments such as Shakespeare? Perhaps knowing about codes...
