.That language has "meaning" we can all agree easily, so why is this a "conceptual understanding" that we should concentrate on? The key issues are that (i) language can have multiple meanings, or perhaps multiple levels of meaning - to say nothing of (ii) the profound problem that my meaning may not be your meaning...The Subject Guide gives the following potted definition of what it means by "meaning" :-
