New Technologies for Global Flows

Introduction

This page develops resources on cybersecurity and e-passports. It begins with some interesting videos revealing the types of possible cybersecurity threats and responses to them. Students then explore some new innovative technologies through a ranking card activity. Students follow a video based on the cybersecurity centre in London before looking at the merits of e-passports through several diagrams and an informative video. Students can then decide their debate topics and prepare a class debate on the merits of cybersecurity and e-passports.

Enquiry Question

How are new technologies for the management of global flows of data and people, including cybersecurity and e-passports being used to manage risks?

Lesson Time: 1 Hour

Lesson Objectives:

  • To describe new technologies for the management of global flows of data and people
  • To explain how these technologies such as cybersecurity and e-passports can be used to manage risks

Teacher Notes:

Starter - Students can mind map in groups different examples of technologies that help with global flows

1. Cyber Attacks and Crime - Students should watch the clip introducing 5 major cyber attacks. They can discuss how organizations and individuals can protect themselves  from cyber attack

2. Cyber Attacks and Crime - Students should answer the questions on the worksheet based on the video cyber attacks and crime

3. Card Ranking Activity Cyber Security - In this active reading exercise students should work in small groups and attempt to rank the example of cyber security response in order of importance.

4. E-Passports - Students should study the diagrams and make note of the advantages of 4th-generation e-passports. They should then discuss the potential threats

They can then follow this up with a video on the pros and cons of e-passports

5. Student Assessment - Class Debate - Students can then decide on some possible debate statements on the subject of cyber security and prepare their debate. There are a couple of suggested examples.

Starter Activity - Technology Mind map - Processes

Mind map examples of different technologies that help manage or reduce risks of different global flows

Consider the following:

  • People excluding migrants
  • Migrants
  • Goods
  • Transport
  • Services
  • Security
  • Finance

Activity - Cyberattacks and Crime - Processes, Power and Possibility

Watch the following clip revealing 5 dramatic cyber attacks

In what ways can organizations and individuals attempt to protect themselves from cyber-attacks?

Watch the following video on the future threats of cybercrime and answer the questions on the sheet provided

Cyberattacks and Crime

Activity - Cybersecurity - Processes and Possibility

Attempt to rank the following set of cybersecurity cards in order of importance

Cybersecurity Cards

Watch the following video based on the UK cybersecurity

Activity - The Merits of e-Passports - Processes and Possibility

Study the diagram in the gallery below and note down the advantages of 4th generation e-passports

What new threats may emerge through e-passports?

Watch the following video on e-passports and how they reduce risks

Assessment - Class Debate

Decide as a group several debate statements on the subjects of e-passports and cybersecurity and prepare to debate.

For example:

  1. This house believes that governments should employ convicted computer hackers to work in cybersecurity
  2. This house believes that all governments should turn to e-passports for enhanced cybersecurity

Debate Structure: Debate timing depends on how many debates are used.

  1. Opening statements (2 minutes)
  2. Points of information and responses
  3. Second statement ( 2 minutes)
  4. Audience Points of information
  5. Open debate
