What is our (subject) story?

How do students make sense of what we teach them?

We expect students to learn and retain a lot of knowledge. But how do we ensure that what we are teaching makes sense to them?

One way of engaging students in the big themes of your subject is to structure your curriculum within a carefully thought-out narrative. I am indebted to an article by Richard Steward in Tes (Plot your lessons like they're Game of Thrones) and a blog by Christine Counsell on narrative curriculums.

Richard Steward suggests that "there is much that we can learn from the way both teachers and pupils consume media content. And the culture of the box set provides an excellent analogy for curriculum design."
