Middle leadership

How do we nurture and grow our middle leaders?

School leadership is multi-dimensional. Effective leadership requires a wide range of competencies and relationship skills. No leader manifests all of the dimensions all of the time. However the effective leader will need to be able to use each of the dimensions at different points of their leadership.

In this section we explore some key competencies and relationship skills of effective leaders: how to effectively influence and motivate people; how to create and lead high-performing teams; and how to effectively communicate with others.

These FOUR aspects of leadership provide a good middle leadership course - for heads of subject, for pastoral leaders, and for coordinators, to help them lead their teams.

Professional inquiry

Our professional inquiry will ask:

  • How do you influence people?
  • How do you lead high-performing teams? What makes a team? How do you grow and develop a team? How do you effectively lead a team?
  • How do you motivate people?
  • How do you communicate effectively?

    Leaders are reflective practitioners

I loved this example, found on Linkedin from Matt Gray, which draws together many of the themes we look at in this section.
