Mock Exam

'A paper students have not seen before'

This page offers two whole exam papers that students will not have seen before. As I teacher I find I can never have enough practice of exam style questions and it is getting easier and easier for students to do find past papers online. Of course, it takes the IB about 2 years to write an exam paper from start to finish. There is lots of reviewing and editing along the way to make sure that there is good syllabus coverage etc. These are just written by me! All files can be downloaded as PDFs.

Practice Exam A

 Practice Exam A - Paper 1

15, 6 mark questions that, in theory get progressively more difficult. Here is the word file if users want to modify.

Practice Exam A - Paper 1 - Solutions Here is the word file.

 Practice Exam A - Paper 2

6 questions with a total of 90 Marks. Here is the word file.

Practice Exam A - Paper 2 Solutions Here is the word file.

Practice Exam B

Here is a second mock exam paper with priginal exam style questions. The papers are included as PDFs but I have also included the files as documents if you want to edit and tweak the papers.

 Practice Exam B  - Paper 1

15, 6 mark questions  - Here is the word file

 Practice Exam B - Paper 2

6 questions with a total of 90 Marks - Here is the word file

Previously on this page.....

As pages get redesigned I am always aware that there may be users who are frustrated that they cant find things that used to be there. As such I am keeping the previous version of the page here. The section was previously called exam styme questiosn. The exam style questions on the site are now shown in botht eh practice sections and the focus  sections and so this part of the site is reduntdant. If you find there there used to be something here that you cant find then please just let me know.

thanks, Jim

The aim is that each question will come with its own web page that contains the question, its solution and a brief screencast that goes through the solution.

Each question will be referenced and teachers will be able to put them together in any way they choose, but I will be making collections as well.

Just added - This is the first draft of a mock exam paper based on the new syllabus. More details and markscheme to follow, but for now, this might be useful.

Paper 1 Paper 2 (Some errors corrected 05/1/14)

Here is an example of the question referencing....

Whilst this is the central store for these questions, they will be linked to from the different sections of the website. Here they will be organised by topic with a separate page for each topic.

Hi :)
Are there answers available for these questions?

Jim Noble 17 December 2017 - 15:32

Thanks, Jim

Noha El Sharawy 28 January 2018 - 07:38

Hi Jim,
Will you be posting anew mock for this year? Thanks

Jim Noble 28 January 2018 - 16:17

Hi Noha,

Actually I do have one on the go - need to add some solutions..... I'll keep you posted

Noha El Sharawy 20 February 2018 - 08:14

Thank you so much! Please, try to post it soon even without answers. I would love to use it for my mocks at the beginning of March.

Peter O'Neil 31 January 2018 - 09:33

Jim, thanks for the mock, I used it and am marking them now. Good to have something that's not available to students. More and more I'm finding kids using past papers worked out and explained via video online
I believe I found two errors on the paper 2 markscheme: Q3b has a "7" in the calculation, but I believe it should be 3.5. That error follows into c as well. Also, Q6c has a "2y" in the Volume calculation, and the height is actually y. Also, Q5 doesn't have point allocations, so I made up my own.
If I'm wrong about the above, please let me know. Thanks, Peter

Debbie Thoresson 3 April 2018 - 10:22

I have the same question about 3b. Peter is right. Right?

Debbie Thoresson 3 April 2018 - 11:14

That changes the answers to:
3b 16.1°
3c 86.7
3e 648 sq cm
All answers to 3 sf

Debbie Thoresson 3 April 2018 - 12:50

Same comment on 6c. I wish I had read the comments before giving the exam. :-S

Lesley Twiss 5 February 2018 - 17:50

Also on paper 2 Q5, I got the expected value would be 5.04, but I put as my answer not enough data because we want a minimum of 100.

Lesley Twiss 5 February 2018 - 17:51

By the way, I love this site. Excellent job, Jim!

Jim Noble 9 February 2018 - 13:51

Glad its useful Lesley - On the mock question - Are you talking about part a)? If so, I think that there would be 2 of the 6 categories with expected frequencies less than 5..... In practice I don't think this will actually come up in an exam, but is obviously important for IAs.. sorry if I have misunderstood or got something wrong, Jim

Noha El Sharawy 28 February 2018 - 08:20

Hi Jim,
Any news about the new set of mocks? We are having our mocks soon at school an dI would love to use it, even without solutions:))

Jim Noble 1 March 2018 - 16:03

Well done Noha - nothing like a bit of pressure to get me going! I have now published a second mock exam paper with original questions above. No solutions just yet...... Hope its useful. I have also included the word files in case you want to edit it a bit. Thanks, Jim

Noha El Sharawy 18 March 2018 - 13:17

Hi Jim, which grade boundaries do you recommend to use for the new mocks? May 2017 grade boundaries are lower than the previous years and I am afraid to inflate the students predicted grades!!

Jim Noble 18 March 2018 - 14:21

Hi - That is a tough call. I tend to always go for higher boundaries for the reasons you state. Always better to be demanding here. I was juts looking at last years which were quite low... but I don't think this mock is particularly difficult so I would go with the higher end. hope that helps.

Noha El Sharawy 18 March 2018 - 17:24

Thank you for your prompt reply !!!

Noha El Sharawy 4 March 2018 - 06:39

Thank you sooooo much!!!!! You are my hero:))

Paul Mccutheon 23 March 2018 - 04:45

Thanks for the novel papers, I agree with earlier posts that students are reviewing past paper. Question 9 on Practice Exam Paper - Example A - Paper 1 seems ambiguous to me. The cars may be on the same side of the radio mast, or the radio mast could be between the two cars.

Nancy Mohamed 29 March 2018 - 19:15

Jim..... they are really useful THANK YOU VERY MUCH :) if u have answers for practice B please send them too. Many thanks

Eva Tarrasón 11 April 2018 - 10:12

Hi Jim,

Thanks for sharing this, very useful!! I found a couple of mistakes, not sure if other people saw it as well?
- Paper 1, question 6c, the question asks about the difference after 2 years, but the answer in the markscheme gives the difference after 5 years.
- Paper 1, question 15c, the explanation in the markscheme gives the right answer (slope is 0.2, but the answer on the top says 0.4 for slope)

Thanks again!

Fariha Fatima 12 April 2018 - 16:03

Thank you very much for these mock papers and all the effort that you have put into making them. They are such a good resource to give to students, especially close to the exams when they have seen all past papers and there are hardly any unseen questions for them.

Jim Noble 14 April 2018 - 15:34

Much thank you to all of you for taking the time to point out errors. I really appreciate it. I think I have now addressed everything. I have also included word files so if you want to adapt these in any other way, you can. Thanks, Jim
