frEEzing water

Friday 15 March 2013

It's still winter here in Norway, no daffodils or snowdrops yet, only thing to look at on the way home is snow and ice. With the continual thawing in the day and freezing at night there are lot of icicles forming, including these strange ones that I saw on my neighbours garage. As you can see they are all hanging at an angle. I'm not sure whay that is but it could be because they were formed in a wind causing the water to drip at an angle. I have done a bit of ice climbing in my time and when climbing frozen water falls you get a lot of this sort of thing. I wonder if it might be possible top measure the wind velocity from the angle? It would make a good EE topic, except that if someone chose it as their topic you can be sure that we wouldn't see any more ice until next winter. I've got 6 EEs in the pipeline this year with some interesting research questions.

  • How does the amount of charge left in a battery affect the programming of a robot (battery powered of course).
  • How much energy is expended when walking with Nordic walking poles (very Nordic).
  • An investigation into the operation and positioning of guitar pick ups.
  • Something to do with resolution and photography
  • early days
  • can't remember

By the way, I think that those icicles are at an angle because the snow slipped not because of the wind.
