Don't look at the laser

Friday 15 September 2017

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to look at a laser? Shah wondered too but he's probably damaged his eyes enough looking at sunspots for his EE research so decided to use his phone instead. The laser is being passed through a polariser which is being rotated, as the intensity changes the size of the image changes. This is rather like the way brighter stars look bigger (they are actually all so distance that they are points of light so have no size). It would be interesting to measure the relationship between the size of image and intensity of the laser. If the laser wasn't so bright you could even plot the angle of the polariser vs spot size, would be a great IA.

I should just say that Shah didn't really look at sunspots, that wouldn't be very sensible.
