Newton was reputed to have said he achieved what he did by standing on the shoulders of giants which means he built on the work that went before him. Real scientists don't work in a vacuum, unless they are particle physicists of course.  In the same way the next set of groups in the group 4 project can build on what has been done, that doesn't mean cheating though, real scientists compare results they don't copy them. It's quite neat the way the format of the project is modeling this aspect of the nature of science. Publish and everyone gets to know your results, keep them secret and science doesn't progress.
