According to the first law of thermodynamics, if you put 10 J of heat into a gas then you should be able to get 10 J of work out but this isn"t the case. To understand why we can consider a simple experiment with a stream of atoms entering a box.Here the atoms all have the same KE, but as soon as they hit the end of the box:The atoms interact with each other so the energy is spread out (oops, and one escaped).
