Chocolate command terms

Tuesday 14 August 2012

When visiting ESF schools in Hong Kong, Syrita Nicholas gave me the following great idea for helping students to better understand the command terms.

She has here students all bring in different types of chocolate to share with the class. Then she gets her students to use the command terms to talk about the chocolate.  In other words:

  • Define
  • Describe
  • Analyse
  • Distinguish
  • Explain
  • Compare
  • Contrast
  • Discuss
  • Evaluate
  • Examine

Clearly there are a few command terms that don't work well - outline, to what extent, apply - but overall a fun activity which may get your students to realize that they really do know the differences between all of these terms.  Or at least when they are served with chocolate.
