The study of childhood trauma and its effects on development is a very important but difficult topic to study. Psychologists study the effects of what is called Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) - that is, physical abuse, sexual abuse, exposure to domestic violence, and a substance-abusing parent. Research indicates that the effects of abuse depend on the child’s age and gender, as well as the duration of the experience.
