Heather has taught IB Diploma Visual Arts for many years to teachers and students. Her passion is inspiring people to connect with the creativity within them, and to help them to find the language and the materials to express it. She has been painting and teaching in Italy for over 20 years and has been awarded numerous residencies and fellowships for her painting, which takes inspiration from the landscape and from early Italian painting with a particular interest in the use of natural pigments.
She was Head of Art at the International School of Florence and has a wide range of professional experience. Her writing includes the Visual Arts chapter of A Practical Guide for the IB Diploma, Cambridge University Press, 2012, and she has contributed to the Visual Arts Subject Guide in past editions. Heather leads workshops for new and experienced IB Visual Arts teachers in Europe, Africa and the Middle East and does consulting in schools around the world. She has a Masters Degree in Fine Art from Central St Martins and degrees from Smith College, USA and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, Italy.
Although originally from the USA, and recently London, Heather lives near Pisa, Italy with her husband Ian, who makes music and olive oil, among other things. Her daughter Aida, currently living in San Francisco, was an International School student and a graduate of the IB diploma programme. Heather and Ian run an artist's studio center in Italy ( La Vigna Art Studios.com) offering workshops, courses and residencies for artists and students, including the Oxford Study Courses IB Art summer course.
