 Top tip!

It is quite common knowledge that students are able to access past IB exam papers and mark schemes from various sources on the Internet. Many teachers tend to use the latest exams and mark schemes for their mock exams, but students also know this so may try to access these papers and mark schemes in preparation for their mocks. It has been known that some students even rote learn the mark schemes. Here are a couple of suggestions to get around this issue:

  • Use SL exam questions for the HL mock exam (and vice versa for the SL exam where core content appears in HL exam papers).

  • Do not include the questions from an entire exam paper, such as the whole of Paper 2 from November 2021 for mock exams in preparation for the May 2022 exams. Instead, use different questions from different exam sessions (i.e. the questions should not all be from same year / exam session).

 Top tip!

If students ask for a suggested length of writing time for each of the three sections in Paper 2, approx. 1.5 minutes per mark tends to work well. So, for Section C (the CUEGIS essay), that works out to be around 30 minutes. This should allow students to have sufficient time to read the stimulus materials, comprehend the demands of each of the questions, and maybe even some time at the end to check some of their answers.
