Cross-curricular linking

Tuesday 30 November 2021

This is Hector, he was one of my students, he is now one of MIT's students. More about him later. Last weekend I was at a climbing competition with another student Filip. Whenever I met one of my friends I would introduce him as "my student". One of them pointed out that this is a strange thing to say, people don't usually have students, they thought I meant disciple haha. When our children were small we lived in a house joined to a student residence at Atlantic College. Students would be in and out all the time. When we visited a friends house our daughter asked them where their students were.

This post has nothing to do with that though, it's about cross curricular planning. I have always though how it would be neat to combine subjects, for example if I taught in Norwegian for a day it would benefit the students studying Norwegian B (maybe). The problem is not all my students study Norwegian B. However, with my student centred approach I could prepare some material in Norwegian that students studying Norwegian B could do. Actually the Norwegian teacher would have to prepare it since I can't write Norwegian.

The website already contains resources in Spanish so I can easily co-operate with our Spanish teacher to get students to practice their Spanish in my class. The other obvious area is Maths and that's where Hector comes in. He is taking some physics courses at MIT but finds it difficult to adapt to using calculus in physics. He got a 7 so was allowed to skip the mechanics course however he is going to take it anyway since he wants to practice his calculus. So the IB has not prepared hin sufficiently for studying physics, maybe it would have done if he had  completed some special activities for students doing HL maths. I'm working on it but it's not easy getting teachers to write material for other peoples lessons.

Other areas of overlap are:

  • Environmental systems
  • Philosophy
  • Other languages
  • Chemistry

When I get the material I will post it here, the Spanish text and multiple choice questions are already here.
