Environmental effects on asthma

How air pollution is involved in the immune response in the lungs is the focus in this study in California.

"While air pollution is known to be a source of immediate inflammation, a new study provides one of the first pieces of direct evidence that explains how some ambient air pollutants could have long-term effects.  Air pollution exposure suppresses the immune system’s regulatory T cells (Treg), and the decreased level of Treg function is linked to greater severity of asthma symptoms and lower lung capacity."[1]

This information can support topic Option H Further Human Physiology -Gas exchange- Outline the possible causes of asthma and its effects on the gas exchange system.  One of the problems of asthma is the constriction of the bronchioles so that air flow is restricted.  Students should be able to list the factors that provoke this inflammation.
