Managing student accounts & mark book

The benefits of using the online mark book facility

Once you have set up the student accounts and the students have activated their accounts (see Creating student accounts) then your students can access the pages you allow so that they can work in their own time. However if you wish the student account can also be used to monitor your students' activity on the tasks you have set (see Setting tasks) and you can also use it as your mark book for any marked work you set your students, whether the task comes from this website or elsewhere. For chemistry you are most likely to use the mark book for sub-topic quizzes and short-answer questions (which require written answers). I'll illustrate these two uses below. Once you can see how these work then you should be able to adapt the mark book for anything else you might need (e.g. reading tasks or tests/exercises from elsewhere including the whole topic multiple choice tests from this site for exams up to November 2024). Please note that the illustrations use a quiz and a writing question from the 2023 programme but the procedure is exactly the same for the 2014 programme - just make sure you choose your pages from the  2014 DP Chemistry (Last exam Nov 2024) section of the site when it comes to setting the task.

In summary:

  • qBank tasks record the mark in the mark book when the student completes the quiz. If the student has several attempts at the quiz all the responses are recorded.
  • In writing tasks the teacher has to review the written answer and award a mark which then appears in the mark book.
  • In reading tasks, students click a 'Read' button at the bottom of the page and a tick appears in the mark book.
  • Custom tasks can be used to record any marks you wish in your mark book.

How to use the mark book facility

Quiz tasks

Step 1 (Teacher) Locate group and set task

Follow the steps given in Setting tasks to give tasks to your students. Remember that you can give any necessary instructions and, if you wish, using 'Exam mode' in  'More options' you can set a time limit for the task.

Step 2 (Student) Student receives notification

Once your students receive notification of the task in their student account they can go directly to the task if they wish

Step 3 (Student) Completion & submission of task

Students complete the task and submit it to you after which they receive the answers and find out how well they have done. The answers may be accessible immediately after they submit or they may only be accessible after the deadline depending on the option you chose in 'Set deadline & Edit".

Step 4 (Teacher) Marks recorded automatically in mark book

The marks  will then appear in your mark book

Step 5 (Teacher) Inspection and analysis of individual student's answers

If you wish you can see which questions each student got correct or had problems with. Just click on the mark by each student - in the example below 5/10 has been clicked on for Justine Jackson.

Writing tasks

For chemistry you are most likely to use these when you want students to answer short-answer questions. You can of course just direct them to the question page and ask them to complete their written answers by a particular date. You would then have the option of collecting their answers in and marking them or simply providing them with the answers after the hand-in deadline and letting them correct their own work. However if you assign it as a task you can monitor their work and also record the marks in your online mark book and send them feedback. Let's do this for  the short-answer questions on S1 The particulate nature of matter.

Step 1 (Teacher) Locate group and task

Set up the writing task by accessing your group, then  "Task manager" then "+ Add task". Select "In page task" and then select the relevant page.  Note that as for the quizzes for last exams November 2024, the page will be found in the teachers pages on the 2014 DP Chemistry (Last exam Nov 2024) section of the website, not in Complete course for students.

Step 2 (Teacher) Set deadline and edit

As with the quizzes set the deadline and add any necessary instructions and decide whether you want students to see the worked model answers as soon as they have submitted or whether you want them to wait unit the deadline has passed (so they cannot pass them on to other students who still have to submit). Note that you may have to give them some specific instructions for writing tasks such as, they will not be able to use subscripts or superscripts when writing their answers so they would have to write sulfuric acid as H2SO4 and Avogadro's constant as 6.02 x 10^23 mol^-1 etc.

Then send the task to all the students in the group.

Step 3 (Student) Location of task

Each student logs in to their student account and finds the task on their dashboard and then clicks on it.

Step 4 (Student) Completion & submission of task

Each student finds the relevant task, reads the instructions, writes his/her answers and then clicks on "Submit task" button at the end of the task.

Step 5 (Teacher)

You will receive notification in the relevant group in your Student access that the task has been submitted with a timer next to the student's name so that you can open their answers and mark them. Assign your mark as an IB 1-7 grade or as a percentage and also add any comment that you wish to send to the student. You can also write a private note to yourself which will not be sent to the student.

Step 6 (Teacher) Mark book updated

Once you have given your mark and clicked on 'Send' or 'Save' it will appear against the student's name and you can see how over the year your mark book will build up. Note that by clicking on the mark you can reopen the task report or even reset the task for the student.

Step 7 (Student)

The student receives notification that you have marked the written task and also that you have commented on it. By clicking on the task the student will see both their mark and the comment. If they wish they can respond to the comment.
