PS2: Conquest and its impact

This topic covers the final stages of Muslim rule in Spain in the late 15th Century and the conquest of Mexico and Peru in the 16th Century.

The main themes for this topic are outlined below; the full syllabus can be found on My IB here.

It is important that you read the IB introduction to this topic carefully as well as the prescribed content.

The Surrender of Granada, by Vicente Barneto y Vazquez

This topic investigates the impact of Spanish conquest. Students have two case studies to examine - each case study focuses on a different region.

  • The first case study is focused on Europe, specifically the Iberian peninsula in the late 15th Century and the impact of Spanish conquest on the Muslims
  • The second case study is focused on Latin America in the 16th Century; specifically Mexico and Peru and the impact of Spanish conquest on the Aztecs and the Incas.

Three key themes are identified for each case study: 'Context and motives', 'Key events and actors' and the 'Impact' of conquest

As with the other Paper 1 topics, the themes for each case study are the same to allow teachers to draw comparisons between the case studies. However, exams will only ever be set on one of the case studies and will never be of a comparative nature.
